Perfect Puppy
(9 to 16 weeks) Give your puppy a head start in a safe, fun environment. Proper socialization is crucial during the first few months of your puppy’s life. In this 5-week class you will learn how to communicate, play, and work with your puppy to teach basic skills for attention and address how to solve common problems such as potty training, chewing, jumping, barking and biting. We will focus on teaching our puppies in a positive way while learning exercises that will build your puppies confidence around new people, teach them proper play interaction with other puppies, and to not be possessive of their toys or food bowl. In order to keep puppies safe, they must have their first set of vaccines and should not go to the dog park or other non-puppy safe environments.
Junior Puppy
(4 to 7 months) In this 5-week class we will teach you how to communicate with and gain control over your puppy. It is for dogs who have attended the Perfect Puppy class or are just starting their obedience training. In this 5-week course we start training your dog to come when called – the first time, every time – even when distracted, not jump up on people and sit nicely when greeting guests, sit and lie down through distraction, walk nicely on a leash without pulling you, and to be able to play and then settle down on command. You and your dog will hit the ground running in this class with techniques that will set you and your dog up for learning success.
Good Dog
(8 months and older) This 5-week class is for those pups that are getting a later start with their training. This class will teach you the basics of how to communicate with your dog in a positive way to teach them the skills they will need to live in harmony with their people. We work on basic skills for attention and recall, sit, down, settle, leash walking, leave it, and calming exercises to help with focus and control. This class will start you and your pup on the path to success and have you saying, “What a Good Dog!”
Super Star
To join this class, you must have previously taken either the Junior Puppy or Good Dog class, or Private lessons with us. This class builds on the behaviors learned in Good Dog or Puppy Classes. We continue to work on attention exercises, build duration for sit and down under distraction and distance, heel, continue to build a rock-solid recall, and other behaviors that will make your good dog into a great dog.
Out and About
To join this class, you must have previously taken Super Star Puppy or Great Dog. In this class we start to take our show on the road. Each week we will meet in a different location to build on behaviors we practiced other classes.
Canine Good Citizen (AKC – CGC)
This class is a 4-week class with the CGC test on the 5th week. In this class we will practice all the items it takes to pass your CGC test, then take the test on the 5th week. The class cost includes the testing fee (It does not include the mail in certificate fee). If you have not taken a class with us before you will need to have an evaluation before joining this class.
Scent-Sational K9 – Scent Detection Training
Your dog’s basic instinct is to use their nose to search for scents. In this class we teach your dog to hunt for scent using positive reinforcement methods while teaching you, “the handler” how to read the cues your dog will show to let you know they are on a working scent. All types of dogs can join this class. One dog at a time works the area and dogs waiting for their turn wait outside of the working area or in the car. This is so dogs are not distracted by other dogs while working. This also enables those dogs that are not thrilled to be around other dogs to come to this class as there is no dog-to-dog interaction. Scent detection is easy to learn, helps build confidence and focus and is a great way to build your bond with your dog.
Things To Keep in Mind While Training with Your Dog
While training with us you will have access to handouts associated with what you are learning. If you have questions or need help with a behavior, you are welcome to contact us. We can schedule a session at a time that works best for you to assess your problem and give you the tools to fix it.
Exercise is important for having well-mannered dogs. If your dog is not exercised often enough, both mentally and physically, they will have excess energy and will find a way to burn off that energy on their own, which usually means frustration for you. It is also much easier to train a dog after a bit of exercise because they have burned off some of their excess energy and are now ready to learn.
And last but not least … Dog training is a process of shaping a dog’s behavior. Every dog is different, and they all learn at their own speed. A dog can pick up something immediately or it may take several tries with much repetition before the dog learns the behavior. Patience and consistency are vital to your dog’s learning.
“In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn’t merely try to train him to be semi human. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog” -Edward Hoaglan
